Middle English Period (1066-1500)
ইংরেজি সাহিত্যের মধ্যযুগের ইতিহাসের সূচনাপাত Norman Duke উইলিয়াম দ্য কনকারার (William the Conqueror) নামক বিজয়ের মাধ্যমে। তিনি ১০৬৬ সালে England দখল করেন। ফলে শুরু হয় ইংল্যান্ডে নরম্যানদের রাজত্ব। ইংরেজি সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস মধ্যযুগ অর্থাৎ ১০৬৬ থেকে ১৫০০ সময়কালকে Middle Age বলা হয়।
The Middle English Period কে তিনটি ছোট ছোট ভাগে ভাগ করা হয় :
- The Anglo-Norman Period (1066-1340) : (অ্যাংলো-নরম্যান যুগ)
- The Age of Chaucer (1340-1400) (চসারের কাল)
- Age of Barren or Dark Age (1400-1500) (অন্ধকার যুগ)
গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় :
i. Middle English Period এর ইতিহাসের তেমন কোনো তথ্য পাওয়া যায় না বলে এই সময়কে Dark Age ও বলে।
ii. ১৫ই জুন, ১২১৫ সালে ম্যাগনাকার্টা (Magna Carta) পাশ হয় যার মাধ্যমে ইংল্যান্ডে রাজার ক্ষমতার লাগাম টানা হয়।
iii. 1295 সালে English Parliament প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।
iv. 11-13 শতাব্দীতে মুসলমান ও খ্রিস্টানদের মধ্যে Crusade নামের একটি ধর্মীয় যুদ্ধ সংঘটিত হয়।
vi. 1362 সালে ইংরেজি ভাষাকে আইন ও আদালতের ভাষা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়।
vii. Black Death এর কারণে Feudal System প্রথা ভেঙে যায়।
viii. 1476 সালে William Caxton প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন Printing Press.
ix. 1492 সালে কলম্বাস আমেরিকা আবিষ্কার করেন।
x. 1498 সালে ভাস্কো-ডা-গামা ভারতে পৌঁছান।
xi. এ যুগেই কোপারনিকাস প্রমাণ করেন যে, সূর্য সকল গ্রহের কেন্দ্র (The Sun is the centre of all planets)
xii. Love, Chivalry and Religion এ তিনটি বিষয় এ সময়কার সাহিত্যে বেশি লক্ষ্য করা যায়।
xiii. 1168 সালে Oxford City তে Oxford University প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।
xiv. 1209 সালে Cambridge City তে Cambridge University প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।
1. Dante (1265-1321)
- Dante has been called ‘the Father of the Italian Language’
- His famous Epic : The Divine Comedy (1320) (originally called ‘Comedia’)
- তিনজন বিখ্যাত ইতালীয় কবিকে একত্রে The Three Crowns/ The Three Fountains (ফোয়ারা) বলা হয়। তাঁরা হলেন Dante (দান্তে), Petrarch (পেট্রার্ক), Boccaccio (বোকাচ্চিও)।
- ‘Inferno’ (the first part of The Divine Comedy) is a famous poem of Dante. ‘Inferno’ means ‘Hell’.
2. Sir John Mandeville
(স্যার জন ম্যান্ডেভিল) 1300-1371
Sir John Mandeville was born in 1300 AD and died in 1372. His Famous work is:
(a) Travels of Sir John Mandeville
3. John Wycliffe (1320-1384)
❖ He translated The Holy Bible
(তিনি পবিত্র বাইবেলের অনুবাদ করেন)
❖ He also translated The New Testament.
❖ He is called the father of English Prose.
❖ He has been characterized as the
‘Evening Star of Scholasticism and the
Morning Star of Reformation’.
4. John Gower (জন গোয়ার) (1330 – 1408)
জন গোয়ারের জীবনকাল (১৩৩০-১৪০৮) ইংল্যান্ডের প্রায় তিনি চসারের সমসাময়িক ছিলেন। তবে গাওয়ারের সাথে তার ঘনিষ্ঠতা ছিল। চসার যখন সাহিত্যকর্মে উল্লেখযোগ্য সাফল্যে পৌঁছেছেন তখন তার লেখা প্রকাশ হতে থাকে।
(i) Speculum Homms or Speculum Meditantis (স্পেকুলাম মেডিটান্টিস)
গাওয়ারের প্রথম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রচনা এটি Speculum Meditantis নামেও পরিচিত। ফরাসি ভাষায় লিখিত। সমাজের পাপের প্রতিফলন এটি একটি দীর্ঘ ধর্মোপদেশ।
(ii) Vox Clamantis (ভক্স ক্লামান্টিস)
(iii) Confessio Amantis (কনফেসিও অ্যামান্টিস)
5. William Langland (1332-1386)
❖ Vision of Piers Plowman (ভিশন অব পিয়ার্স প্লাওম্যান)
Note : This poem was also a social satire and perhaps it was the first great English satire.
6. Geoffrey Chaucer (1340-1400)
(জিওফ্রে চসার ইংরেজি সাহিত্যের সূর্যকারি)
জিওফ্রে চসার চতুর্দশ শতকের কবি। ইংরেজি সাহিত্যকে সঠিকভাবে চসারের সময় থেকেই ধরা হয়। কেননা তার পূর্বে যে সাহিত্য রচনাকর্ম আছে সেগুলো ইংরেজি ভাষায় নয়। হয় ল্যাটিন ভাষায় নয়তো অন্য কোনো ভাষায়।
i) He is the poet and diplomat of Middle English Period.
ii) He is the first national poet of England.
iii) He is the father of Modern English Poetry. He is also considered to be the father of English poem. Infact, He is the father of English Literature.
Chaucer is called the morning star of English Literature.
